TEXT FILE WRITING EVALUATOR
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
Yes, Virginia, there IS another writing evaluator on the
shareware market. FSText is a menu driven prgram that evaluates
samples of written material for READABILITY, PERSONAL INTEREST,
and NEGATIVITY. While there are many english text evaluators,
FSText has qualities of its own. It is quick, easy, and simple
to use. It is also shareware, and that makes it available to you
for evaluation before you decide to pay for it. Whether you write
simple business letters, articles, technical works, or even nov-
els, FSText will probably surprise you when it evaluates your
writing. This is true even if you're familiar with the concepts
of readability, personal interest, and negativity. Try FSText and
see if you don't find that this is true. .
USING FSTEXT
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
Load FSText from the command line (or an equivalent execu-
tion menuing program) with the command FSText. Use it to evalu-
ate your writing for readability, personal interest, and negati-
vity. From the main menu, select a directory, load, or view a
text file with FILE OPTIONS. Evaluate a file with the EVALUATE
option. Use the F1 key for help. Press ESCAPE to either con-
tinue from a selected option, or quit the program from the main
(horizontal) menu.
FSText evaluates readability according to the Rudolf Flesch
index of reading ease. This is achieved by counting sentences,
words, and syllables, and refering to a lookup table containing
the Flesh constants of readability. An interactive comment is
made on screen to place the evaluated written material into per-
spective. FSText places your writing sample into a range of dif-
ficulty from Very Easy to Ultra Difficult. It also places the
sample into the relative category of published material, such as
Time Magazine, etc.
Human interest is evaluated according to the Rudolf Flesch
index of reader interest. This is achieved by counting personal
words and personal sentences, and comparaing them to a lookup ta-
ble containing the Flesh constants of human interest. Personal
words are first, second, and third person pronouns, and plural
pronouns referring to people. They also include words that can be
assigined to either the masculine or feminine gender, such as fa-
ther, mother, brother, son, daughter, etc. Personal sentences
either contain one or more personal words, or are delineated by
qotes, exclamations, question marks, etc. FSText places your wri-
ting sample into a range of reader interest from Dull to Very In-
teresting. It also places the sample into the relative category
of published material, such as Reader's Digest, etc.
Negativity is evaluated by counting negative words and sen-
tences, and comparing them to a lookup table. If there are less
than 35% negative words and sentences, the sample is evaluated as
acceptable. FSText places your writing sample into a range of ne-
gativity from Affirmative to Negative. It also places the sam-
ple into a relative category of reader impact ranging from Opti-
mistic to Cynical.
FSText ignores non-text files as much as possible, by check-
ing the file extention when it searches a directory for files. If
a file has the extention 'exe,' or 'com' for example, it will be
ignored. There may be files in a selected subdirectory that FSText
will not list for selection on screen. So don't be alarmed, the
files are not missing, but simply ignored. If a file has no punc-
tuation, attempting to evaluate it will produce an error message.
A file MUST be at least 100 words long to evaluate. ONLY the first
100 words in a file are evaluated. If a file contains a heading,
or title information, it will pollute the evaluation score. A file
MUST be and ASCII text file. No provision is made to evaluate en-
crypted word processor files. Examples of encrypted word proces-
sor files are those produced in the Wordstar document mode, and
Wordperfect, Microsoft Word files, etc. The best way to produce
evaluation files with almost ANY word processor, is to select a
sample of several paragraphs (more than 100 words), and copy or
print the sample to an ASCII file. Using Wordstar, for example,
load an encrypted wordstar file with the N (non-document) mode.
Mark a block of text with control KB and control KK, and write the
text to a separate file with control KW. ABANDON the original
file, taking care NOT to save it in the non-document mode. You can
print a selected block of text with almost any word processor to
an ASCII text file in a similar manner. Then load FSText where you
can load and evaluate several files at one sitting. Refer to the
documentation for your word processor to learn how to produce
small ASCII text file samples of your writing for evaluation.
FOR ETHICAL USERS
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────-
Try FSText. Distribute it freely. If you're amused by
it, but find no use for it, don't worry about it. If it's cute,
but beneath your dignity, give it away. Still, if you find
yourself USING it, if it works for you, the shareware license
fee is $10.00.
It's the nature and spirit of things that really make
them valuable to us. FSText CAN make evaluation of written ma-
terial fast and enlightening. FSText has a very reasonable price,
and an easy to use interface. Used properly, these features can
save you personal time.
If FSText saves time, it saves money. At $10.00, the FS-
Calc License is nominal. If it only saved a few accumulated hours
in the course of a season, it would still be significant. Your
own time is unquestionably worth more than five dollars an hour,
isn't it?
FSText is copyrighted. If you use FSText, Send your check
or money order to Freestyle Software, 24307 Magic Mountain Park-
way, Suite 255, Valencia, CA, 91355. The FSText license is only
$10.00. So if you use it, be dignified enough to register it.
It's the right thing to do. (Yeah, yeah...He's Naive!)

If you like FSText, you might also find use for FSRead, a
very fast text file browser that allows loading files up to 425K
into memory. Change drives from an automacally built menu of
drives, or directories from a full graphic tree. Choose up to 36
color attribute combinations for file viewing. Mark text blocks,
or enter text strings for searches, and set place markers for ex-
tremely quick searching. Print out all, or just portions of any
text file. FSRead was written as a shareware documentation file
reader, and is entirely light bar menu driven, with pop-up inter-
active help. You can also try FSCalc, a TSR calculator with a 500
item tape and memory display. FSCalc is an easy to use personal
desktop calculator that pops up to the screen with the appearance
of a hand held calculator. It is therefore easy and famailar to
nearly all. Then there's FSLabel! If you own a Hewlett Packard
printer, FSLabel is one of the few automatic disk labeling pro-
grams that reads the file names on a disk and prints a label on a
full sheet of lables. Select the exact label position on screen
by moving the cursor on a visual page of labels. FSLabel is easy
to use, and prints labels for either 3.5" or 5.25" diskettes.
